About Free Will.

Below is a video talk in which Robert Sapolsky expresses quite some nonsense. For a long time I’ve been a fan of his university lectures, watching entire series a few times over during years, but this is just incredible how he can’t see the contradictions in his arguments.

You cannot selectively decide the free will to be absent only to those who commit crimes and therefore, as he argues, should not be punished. If nobody is responsible for their actions, then those who select punishments for crimes, and those who execute the selected punishments, are not responsible neither. It would be a mess if you continue this reasoning — the university lectures and the words Robert Sapolsky himself was producing, would be meaningless .. which apparently are, by his own logic. As one has said: some scientists think themselves out of existence . I think it can even be the case that if there was no free will, then the evolution of biological subjects would not be possible at all, which brings free will down to every living organism to the very smallest one. Free will could be the only thing that separates a living matter from non living.
Another big error in the video talk below is demanding the proof and claiming that until proof of free will is presented, there is no free will. Wrong. The absence of proof for the existence of free will is not a proof of its non existence. We may never know how it works, but maybe we will one day, as the science advances. Listen at 15 min 59s — he clearly messed it up, stating himself that “Absence of proof is not the same thing as proof of absence”, with that statement making his demand to get proof of free will, incoherent.
The argument about quantum level random processes requiring 23 orders of magnitude of change to influence a single neuron, and that it would be random anyway, is not a valid argument. Free will does not need to influence a single quantum event, but contrary — free will can influence many quantum states at once, and it does. It is proven over and over again with experiments by Dean Radin — free will is making random quantum events coherent in measurable ways. In other words, influence by pure mind stops randomness on quantum level, atomic level, and larger scales. The related material has been published in scientific literature for decades.
One of the worst errors. He sais that consciousness has nothing to do with free will, completely dismissing the question simply because — as he said — he does not understand it.
He ignores the question — responding with an answer not related to this — that often people call each other on phone randomly at the same time, and mathematicians have proven it to be impossible by the pure probability. Not exactly a question about free will, but a proof of things we still don’t understand about the universe.

Robert Sapolsky is a specialist in a narrow field, which makes his position understandable. It is not his fault that he is not able to see the big picture — he just turned out that way by the environment, and his free will is not strong enough to see through the impact his research has had on him, making his position 80-90% predictable.

A POSSIBLE PROOF OF FREE WILL

The fact that the environment, experiences, medication and other chemical influences, recent events etc., will only produce certain probability of outcome, never a 100% guaranteed outcome, could be taken as a proof of existence of free will. Regardless of how hard you try to manipulate a living organism physically or mentally, there are still some whose free will is strong enough to resist the predicted overall behavior and concrete actions at any moment in time.

I should write the title like this: Everything You Know About Free Will Is Wrong, Robert Sapolsky. Well, some things are true of course, but for sure science does not know everything.
