How to recognize good scientists and avoid people lacking critical thinking.
There can be many different tests for assessing critical thinking, but I will give just one example. There are still claims that the historic moon landings were real. If someone asserts that they indeed happened, ask them for a single piece of evidence that proves it. That evidence must be something that cannot possibly be created by any other means except humans actually being present on the Moon. This is the true scientific approach, regardless of one’s personal sentiments about the issue.
The ability to think critically cannot be judged merely by whether someone accepts or rejects the moon landings, but rather by what data they consider relevant. Even people who argue the landings were fake may have reached that conclusion for the wrong reasons. It is important to evaluate why they hold their belief, is their reasoning based on sound, scientifically conclusive evidence that leaves no alternative explanation.
On the other hand, if a person declares the landings were real but cannot present evidence that withstands scrutiny — whether because of social pressure, financial or career interests, lack of research, or poor critical thinking — then I would not regard them as someone who can advance science. I prefer to avoid engaging with such individuals.
However, if someone openly admits that they do not know, because they have not yet researched the matter, that can be taken as an honest response. In such cases, it may be more worthwhile to ask them another question of a similar type — one that challenges popular opinion and requires careful, independent thinking.
