Why do we age — applicable to humans only.

This is a hypothesis based on what I have learned over several decades. It should be falsifiable and therefore scientific.

My premises are:

– We, as humans, seem physically too fragile to be the mere product of a few hundred thousand years of evolution from more robust species.

– Our brains are capable of solving incredibly complex tasks, which seems unlikely to have evolved in the short period we have (theoretically) existed. This enormous brain capacity might be a relic from a much older, lost civilization.

– There are stone ruins of ancient civilizations, whose construction is impossible to replicate even today.

These premises suggest that modern human civilization consists of survivors from a lost civilization — not entirely wiped out when one or more global cataclysms struck the earth. The brain organizes and maintains the entire body — if it is underused, the body slowly loses function. My theory is that if we reach a level where we constantly and fully use our brains, our bodies will remain younger for much longer.

How is this falsifiable?

If statistical data shows that people who engage in complex mental work throughout their lives have better overall health and longevity, that would support the theory. If higher brain activity — not simply demanding use based on once learned and hardened knowledge, but constant active learning — leads to more efficient clearing of toxic byproducts in the brain, rather than accumulation, this would support my hypothesis. If not, then the hypothesis is wrong.

My prediction:

As long as humans continue to focus on learning more than on relying on the habits of applying already acquired knowledge, aging will not negatively affect health. The brain must certainly not be overused — it needs adequate rest — but the underlying principle of life should be one of constant critical thinking: updating old knowledge with new insights, discarding outdated information, and maintaining continuous mental plasticity. Those whose knowledge is hardened will die out — that’s what the universe needs perhaps as we are a part of the universe.

My comment:

Perhaps someone else has proposed something similar, but I arrived at this idea through my own experience. The more and faster I learn new things, the better I feel. As soon as I pause in learning, I become uncomfortable and quickly seek something new to learn in order to feel better. If that’s not possible, I perform certain mental exercises while carrying out my daily routine. Only this way I feel truly well, and my health seems to be better as the result.
