Energy and Matter from Nothing.
Since it is possible to extract energy from the quantum vacuum, as demonstrated by experiments — refer to the work of Garret Moddel — this suggests that matter can, in principle, be created from empty space. The question is whether the universe accomplishes this on its own, or if it requires intelligent input from living beings to create the high-tech configurations of space necessary for energy extraction.
The resulting creation of new matter is simply a further transformation of energy into matter, whether this occurs intentionally or through natural processes. Perhaps the expansion of the universe is the result of intelligent input — a consequence of advanced technological civilizations throughout the cosmos.
Given the currently measured expansion rate of the universe, only a small amount of newly created matter is required — about one atom per cubic kilometer per year. If a large amount of energy is extracted from the quantum vacuum in one location, it would average out to just a small amount when considered over the vast volume of the universe.
Based on the expansion rate of the universe, it may be possible to estimate how much energy advanced civilizations are extracting, and thus infer how densely populated the universe is with high-tech civilizations.
