ZPE technologies — dangerous or not?
Could tapping into zero-point energy (ZPE) start some irreversible processes, like creating a black hole and causing a disaster on Earth? I don’t think so. In fact, the universe is constantly “tapping into” ZPE, yet we don’t observe random black holes forming as a result. The ZPE density is enormous*, so extracting just a tiny amount will not make any difference to the background energy.
Even if something goes wrong with a ZPE device, the flow of usable energy tapped cannot become a runaway process, because the energy-carrying materials will burn out — destroying the apparatus that was tapping into ZPE — well before there could be a problem. The maximum possible usable energy extraction is many orders of magnitude smaller than what’s needed to start any runaway process.

* There is theoretically enough energy in one cubic centimeter of vacuum to create all the matter in the visible universe. Some theoretical calculations show that zero-point energy (ZPE) has a much smaller energy density — in a coffee cup, just enough to evaporate the world’s oceans.
