Saving method for rocket launches.
Just watched recent rocket launches and had an idea.
Every extra kg of cargo to launch into space costs extra fuel, so why not to save it with a simple trick. The rockets are extremely heavy, and the largest amount of the fuel per distance is spent on the very first seconds. On the few first seconds, a lot of fuel can be saved by placing rockets onto platforms with enormous springs. That’s it. How to build a stable platform with unidirectional push, without being unequal and/or shaky, is just a matter of engineering, nothing impossible there.
The springs can be compressed by the weight of the rockets only, or can even be compressed further. The system must permit a measured release of the stored energy in springs during launch of a rocket, so that it matches exactly the needed force to save fuel and no more, not to break the rocket in the process.
Just one meter of distance of extra push can save tons of spent fuel, which will equal the weight of an extra payload.
There could be one issue though. If the rockets are “fragile” and need to be lifted “gently”, then for the extra push they must be built stronger. That will mean extra weight of the rocket itself — in this case the rocket must carry even more fuel, not less, because the whole extra weight of the rocket must be carried to space. Rockets should be strong enough for such a preloaded push without building them heavier — the structural limit before breaking will dictate how much extra push can be given, but definitely it is not zero for any rocket.
Also a counterweight system can be used, which could even be easier to build and have a longer effective work distance, up to several meters, without losing energy by the end of the distance of the push.
The issue of rocket engines beginning to lift the rocket before full power is achieved, can be solved by a delayed release of the counterweight system, or the spring loaded system. Even both methods can be used, one built on top of another. With a clever engineering everything is possible — it’s a mechanical system which can be made very robust. The part which takes the heat of the rocket engines will be only the rigid platform, while the delicate/expensive moving parts will be farther away from the heat blast, being protected.
A platform on springs/counterbalance, which is loaded only by the weight of the rocket, without further loading, should give a gentle enough extra push for liftoff, saving tons of fuel.
I imagine that even an electromagnetic system can be built, to precisely control the initial extra push to a rocket, but the question will be the cost then. A mechanical system should not be that expensive — over many rocket launches it should return the investment, not so much by savings on the fuel, but mainly by the extra income from the additional payload.
