PAINTING ART

This year, while already in Madeira, I bought for testing tens of pens, to paint sigils on them and to sell on the street as an art, for some income. I bought several waterproof markers in different sizes, black markers mostly, but also few white ones. It turned out that the waterproof markers didn’t stay on pens very well and made hands dirty. They should have been permanent markers, but perhaps the heat, humidity and the dissolving chemical components from hands made the paintings lose color. Then I bought varnish, to cover the drawings. In fact I had to cover the entire pens with varnish, for equal color and shine, but the result wasn’t as good as I expected.. definitely not good enough to sell as artwork.

BURNING ART

I also tested with burning sigils onto the pens. For that purpose I created wire stamps, testing different wires in thickness and strength. The sigil stamps for burning were flat on one side, or a bit curved, to leave burnt engravings onto the curved surface of the pens. I wasn’t quite happy with the process, because it created toxic smoke which I had to breathe in. The wire I was heating with a very small gas torch. Here in Madeira the wind is not constant, often it changes direction in every few minutes, so you can’t simply find a place where smoke is blown away from you — it will stick to your clothes, bags, and so on. Thus the burning art isn’t exactly a healthy activity, and the result wasn’t as clean as I expected neither. I had to cut off with knife lots of excess plastic, and the process left behind quite visible scratch marks. Not good to sell as art again — another failed experiment with my art.

ENGRAVINGS

This year I also bought a real engraving tool, but I couldn’t find any engraving tool which would work with the power banks, which I also use for charging my devices. The engraving tool only works while plugged into a power outlet. Sometimes I keep testing the engraver, trying to improve my skills in a bar, having a coffee — in the places where they don’t mind the noisy engraving process. The tool itself is very small, fits easily in a small bag or even in a large pocket, but it’s quite loud, not producing a pleasant music obviously. Because of that, in few months since I purchased the expensive tool, I worked with it only in few occasions. I still live in tent in a cave, which is in an abandoned garden ..

.. no potable water, no electricity, etc., therefore, for engraving I must go somewhere, to plug the tool to power outlet for a few minutes, and try not to annoy others for too long time.

OTHER ART FORMS

Definitely I haven’t tested yet all the affordable art forms, to create the sigils, so I may come up with a better idea one day. For now I create my art mostly on android devices, and let the art to be printed and cut with special machines created for the precise and clean result. But it’s not free — I have to cash out money in advance, to produce the art, without knowing if I will be able to sell the art one day.

Nevertheless, I enjoy the process of creating art — I don’t mind to spend some money on it. Buying the materials, tools, time, and also producing some of the art with expensive machinery, is a kind of luxury for me at my current situation, especially the time — but it’s a quality time, a happy time. The process of creating art is quite therapeutic, like a good meditation, and the result is worth it in every sense.
