compressing digital data
some 25 years ago i heard of a huge prize for a challenge to compress and decompress digital data without losses even more, better than it was known to be possible at that time. the problem was that over the internet the data was moving very slowly and it took a lot of time to send some larger files.
i don’t know why i was thinking about it today, but it suddenly hit me how it’s possible. maybe there are such solutions out there already. and perhaps this approach is only reasonable these days, when the processing power of almost every computer and smart device allows to go through several compressing solutions of a file, and then decide which way to send the particular file is the most compact. even parts of a single file can be compressed in different ways.
the compression file would carry the same name of the overall method, but inside there would be possible to contain a number of different compression formats. in the beginning of the compressed file, there would be a reference to which compression method was used in which section of the file.
that’s it, simple. to be a practical method though, it would require a rapid sampling of a file for all the methods of compression and to verify for the best results. i guess such method will not be practical yet on the go, only for a long storage files, an archive, where references are drawn from regularly and sent out over the internet repeatedly. therefore, the file does not need to be sampled again for the best compression.
when quantum computing becomes a thing, not being anymore a hype with restrictions to practical use, then such multi mode compression will perhaps be of a practical use also on the go, with yet unknown and untested files for the best compression.
