Good person. A philosophical dilemma.
A good person should not let liars to get their way. Often that means sacrificing time, taking it away from seemingly more important things be it science, engineering, or other activities of advancement of the society. What’s the point in advancing the science if the liars will take over the world, little by little, while good people prefer to work on the bigger things instead of fighting back on liars and bullies. As the result, the bad people, liars and bullies, will gather whole the power, and good people will continue working hard for the society while staying poor and becoming ever more powerless.
Therefore, the definition of a good person is not the one who keeps working hard and honest way, but who also fights back to every bully, and to every person who tries to profit by using lies instead of getting their way by honest means. What’s the point for the good people in advancing the science and technology if in the end the liars and bullies will be using it for controlling honest and hard working people.
The definition of good person is more complex than simply choosing immediate good acts for a greater good. A good person is someone who takes time to think through the long term consequences of their actions whenever possible, and if that’s the case then stop working for the benefit of liars and bullies, creating resistance to dishonest profiteers as much as realistically possible.
The old saying that evil thrives when good person does nothing about it, is incorrect. The one who does nothing about evil cannot be good person but is complicit in the evil that others do, by ignoring it.
A good person works hard to the best of abilities, is honest, and don’t let bad people use them. It doesn’t mean trying to save everything from every evil — that would be impossible. It would be enough for every good person to take care of their own honest surrounding and life affairs, restricting dishonest people from using them. And if that’s not enough, then honest people create institutions with professionals who tackle greater evil than individual good people are capable of managing on their own.
Whatever organisations there exist to fight evil, a good person cannot discard personal responsibility on fighting back evil wherever it begins on even a smallest level. It is a must for a good person to fight even a smallest and seemingly harmless evil that crosses their way, before it grows in power and takes a habit to profit on others by dishonest means.
