Entire saturday wasted. Or maybe not.

Today, instead of planned large garden cleaning work, and instead of working on my promised business projects, I had to deal with another issue. About it a bit later, below.

Last week, apart of buying the urgent security material, I spent a few hundred euros on all the needed tools to work in garden and house. I couldn’t afford fire extinguishers, so the cleaning of the garden from all the dead plants was the planned task today. The fire extinguishers in Funchal cost 2 to 3 times more than in Paris where I lived before moving over here. Too much. And they won’t be enough anyway against a garden fire. Talking to firefighters they said that the best against “grass fire” in garden is water. Luckily I have plenty of it coming from the mountain — I will only need to buy perhaps a few more big water buckets to collect it, so there will always be enough spare water to act quickly in case of a fire.

Yesterday, on friday evening, coming again home earlier, I spent half a day cutting a passage way through half a garden — it was (and still is) a jungle. Well, when I came here two weeks ago I was able to somehow pass till the last corner of the garden, almost crawling in some places, to verify for any dangerous objects and for having an idea what works need to be done. Now I have cut a reasonable passage — no more need to crawl through. The most of the half a day on friday went for cutting a huge swath of dead and alive plants which were hanging high up on a large power cable, growing from the top of the wall and dangerously pulling the cable downward with whole the weight of perhaps few hundred kilograms. I needed an assistance of a passing truck, to get that high. The power cable is large and inside a heavy isolation, so I had no danger in cutting off the plants around it.

Anyway, these were just plans to continue cleaning the garden today and in coming days, now things must be taken differently I suppose. All my further works around the place must now be slowed down, not to waste my energy for nothing. The reason is yet another issue — someone claimed to own the place.

Today morning I heard strange noise near the wall door and went out to investigate. Long story short, concluding over an hour of talk involving the police which the alleged owner called, it ended up with nothing for the so called owner. At one point I agreed to look for another place as quickly as possible, but then a contradiction in the talk of the “owner” revealed that the ownership of this place has been lost long time ago. So it made me think twice. I don’t wish to be a simple pushover to random people, even though I usually avoid issues by leaving conflicted locations. I may never find a stable life if I continue just going away from wherever there’s a problem, whether real or perceived. But, because there may now begin legal proceedings — who knows for sure — I rather will not invest much more money nor time here, until things clear up a bit.

At this point I rather will not go into much details of an hour long talk. I filmed everything and after the encounter spent quite some time to save, to back up, and to review whole the recorded material. A little bit I can reveal though.

The “owner” came down on my presence in the previously abandoned location too hard, refusing in the beginning to give me even two days to pack my things and leave, and refusing to talk with me to find a solution together, pulled down a sign with my contact details on the wall outside, which I had installed two weeks ago, and so on.

The police were very professional and impartial, advising me to leave as now the owner has appeared and things have changed, no longer the land being abandoned. And then suddenly the “owner”, responding to one of my casual questions, accidentally dropped some words which meant that the ownership claim is not true. And it was filmed, so I immediately changed my attitude, demanding the proof of the ownership before deciding about my position to leave the place or not, and I requested time for a legal consultation. The “owner” didn’t give any names or contacts for further communication, so after an hour of talk it all looked like a show, a spectacle to scare me off the property. I mentioned that if the claim of ownership is false, it my bring criminal proceedings for the police call, and it calmed down the angry “owner” further, calling me even a “friend” and trying to appeal to my morals. It sounded strange the claim that the place is supposedly close to the heart of the “owner” when it was for years used by drug addicts, a fire hazard, and full of garbage in and around the place. Me cleaning the place and taking care of it somehow is bothering. Very suspicious.

Again, for any possible upcoming legal proceedings I’m not going into much more details right here and now. I must consult with some people to see what I can write about on my blog, before the case is concluded. Regardless of my previous experience in dealing with different legal issues and even having a legal consulting agency some 30 years ago, I still need to verify with people who are more experienced — some laws may have changed in significant ways and are not exactly the same across whole the Europe.

Now I must decide if I want to stay here or not. If I will find another place I will leave, maybe, to avoid possible head ache which would divert my attention away from my projects. But wherever I will go, there may always begin new problems.

This place is far not perfect — it’s too noisy, near several roads with quite a lot of traffic, so it could be wise to look around. Maybe just behind a corner somewhere nearby is a better place, or at least more quiet. I have had no time to explore everything near the town. The town itself is full of abandoned places but in the town it’s way too noisy even at night.

By the way, before installing myself here I consulted with the people who know local laws, including with people in the Police Office nearby. I was given green light to install myself in an abandoned place, until an owner would show up and would demand me to leave. Many neighbours have my contact in case they hear about the true owner, or see something strange happening. Right since the beginning I talked to all the neighbours I met around the place. Some even were openly glad for my presence here as it is now safer to walk in the area. So, the show today may have been put up by some jealous person, just to push me out and to take over the place. Everything points to that. After reviewing the video material few times I’m quite sure there’s something not right– how the alleged owner acted first, and after the talk with me and with the police.

From the words of neighbours, there has been some older private ownership of the land, but all the land in the particular location has been sold for the new road long time ago. The money from the sold land has been pocketed by previous owners, so they have nothing to claim, neither their relatives. Only a tiny spot, a narrow strip of the land, is unused for the road, and that’s where I found a shelter.

There have also been some claims that this place is too dangerous because the rocks above are unstable. If it was true then no cars would have been allowed to pass here, yet during most of the week heavy trucks are passing every 5-10 minutes to the nearby construction site. Also, right down the hill from here is a business which operates hazardous materials while living houses are right next to it, so it does not look like a concern of the danger from the falling rocks is the case here. The rocks above do look dangerously cracked, but they are all smooth and round which means they haven’t fallen for hundreds of thousands of years — the rain water, especially here where it rains very little, must have had a lot of time to polish the stones. No fresh cracks are visible on the supposedly dangerous rocks. If a large earthquake hits then there is no safe place to be anywhere in Madeira.

I take a week to decide my next step, whether I will go away quickly, or will take time to find a decent living place before leaving, or will stay here until the proof of the ovnership has been presented by someone. Nobody should be concerned about my stay here, if only the drug addicts who conveniently used this place before me coming here. Meanwhile I’ll be on a search for other abandoned living places around. Once again the business projects involving my unique cryptography method must be postponed.

Right now my time is too limited for spending it on secondary things, to select and post any videos, or even photos. Will do it when the universe gives me enough free time for that. Or if I decide that doing so is a priority, to have a public record, then I will do it even if that would mean a few nights with no sleep.. need to think about it.
