New location.

Been for a few days in a new location now. A beautiful place, but it doesn’t look very safe here. It is Madeira, it means that nowhere is really safe. I mean, you can be on the roads which are crazy, with hanging rocks above and below, ready to fall whenever there is a bit of earthquake.

The more I look around in my new place the more I am unable to comprehend how come the rocks above me haven’t still fallen. Neighbours say that the entire life they lived here there has no rock ever fallen. The hanging rocks may still be there for millions of years, well, let say for thousands of years, before they finally fall. But my lack of understanding is real as I’m an engineer by training.

Perhaps behind the wide visible cracks there are some angles and shapes of the rocks that stop them from moving any further, there must be, as to explain the position of the rocks which are almost like defying gravity. But there’s one more issue. The whole huge ancient lava flow, cracked to countless mingled rocks, is on top of loose pebbles. One can easily take the sand and pebbles with bare hands from below the mountain of solid rocks. Here are literally caves built into the mountains by removing the loose gravel from below the solid rocks, and rooms are built into the caves this way, with walls like in a regular house. But the man-made walls in the caves will not stop the mountain from coming down, if it starts moving, and neither they stop the gravel if it begins caving in.

If there’s a bit stronger earthquake then the entire mountain could slip and go whole the way down to the ocean, because apparently the ancient lava mountains are on top of some even more ancient ocean beaches with loose stones, now located higher above the current global water level. And I am now living here, in one of the cave rooms, with a garden plateau built below the hanging rocks, with a beautiful view to the ocean far away.

There’s also a possibility that the layer of gravel under the volcanic mountains is acting as a buffer, protecting the rocks above from shaking too hard during an earthquake. The mountains have for sure seen so much shaking that the loose pieces have fallen off long time ago, while the fractured and interlocked rocks are hanging on. Well, after some unusually large shaking some weaker rocks will definitely break loose. The hope is that with the years moving on, the shaking of the ground is only getting weaker as the ancient volcano is cooling down ever more, deep below.

For some reason I feel completely safe here, or perhaps ready to die in this paradise. An hour ago, from the point of view as an engineer, I was thinking that I should find another, safer place. But then again, where is it safe in Madeira when an earthquake happens?! Or is it safe anywhere in the world? So, I must think again if I need to look for a safer location, a place where to set up my home and to retire.

Wherever my new home will be, eventually there will be a time to die, into something. To the old age maybe, which could come sooner rather than later if the body and mind are not taken care of. But I do take care of myself not planning to get old yet. Or maybe it is better to enjoy the moment with not much planning into the future, living under the rocks with the still relatively healthy years, letting the nature to decide when my time will come. Who knows the right answer? The end is guaranteed in either way, by the will of the universe.

I should close my engineering eye and enjoy more the beauty of the nature, however fragile it may be. At the moment I will be staying in this beautiful place, not so far from the city, so I can get to the center in less than half an hour of walk, with no transport needed. Very convenient. It will not be very easy to find a better place.
