Wars.
The wars will be going on until there will be several space colonies built in a distant future, even while still attached to earth, capable of sustaining human life in the numbers needed. Everyone must have enough personal space, not to fight because of the limited land.
Far in the future, when the colonies will detach from earth, there will be no fight about the land, because everyone can build as large personal space capsule as affordable, while the rest will be living in shared colonies. At least I hope that it’s possible to eliminate constant wars, because for building new “land” in the form of new space capsules, attached to colony, there will be technology out there for mining resources from space rocks all around. The colony itself could decide to move closer to the stuff out there which could be used, for the capacity to expand the colony.
I think that nobody will want to have a personal capsule, because it will be impossible to live in them alone or even in small numbers. To be self sufficient all of the people need to live in large enough communities that all of the needed tasks can be handled, with ample redundancy in human power. A space colony will need to have enough backup work force that in case of any necessity, be it due to an accident or illness or an urgent upgrade to the structure, there will be enough people at hand to take care of the situation.
It is quite possible that there will be wars between the future colonies, if the resources will get scarce. At the same time, it is also possible that all wars will end, because the weapons meant to destroy dangerous space rocks will be capable to destroy any other colony, deterring them from attacks.
Every colony must have their own weapons, unlike the large engines to move the colonies around, which should be separate from the colonies, for safety and economy reasons. When needed, the engines could be attached and detached, for maintenance, new engine development, etc. But depending on the technology of the engines, if they are safe enough to build inside the colonies, then each separate structure can also have their own powerful engines to relocate in space.
Wars could be in the future avoided at any cost, between space colonies, because even if the resources will happen to be scarce at some times, it is safer for the survival to reduce population by some smarter means. The nearby separate colonies are always good to have, in very good relations, in case there’s an accident in such a large scale that it would demand relocation of the population to another colony.
