self-awareness

any living organism which actively hunts for food, even a smallest organism down to one cell, must be aware of its own body to distinguish between the dynamics of moving their body by own will or being moved by something else.

the distinctions between smaller and larger, less and more complex organisms, can be made regarding to their different senses about surrounding, giving different levels of awareness, while the true self-awareness remains the same.

a difference about knowing oneself could come from the level of memory about previous experiences, thus between the level of knowledge about the world around. that said, a basic memory must exist already in the smallest organisms, to be able to make a distinction between own body and surrounding environment, to be self-aware.

when the body of an organism is large enough for some parts of it being sensed by other parts from the outside, which could be only a small cluster of cells, the self-awareness must be present even in the organisms which don’t actively hunt for food but wait for the food to bump into it.
