almost always i begin working on my projects right after waking up, usually at five or six in the morning.. even if going to sleep at two or three at night. the frequent short sleep doesn’t affect me much because i recover my mental forces with a daytime nap once or twice a week, when there is no way i can concentrate anymore regardless of all my eager interest and strong will to continue.
today after waking up, instead of working and studying new things, i decided to review the video lectures which i posted yesterday (SAC #A-09), to see if i missed something. it does happen that i miss some context or words because i download all videos (only very few videos are blocked from downloading with special apps which are not available on google play) and watch them in high speed, normally x2,5 to x3, and some slow videos also x4. directly on youtube the maximum is x2, which i consider too slow, a waste of time, after decades of practice with higher speed. people have said that at that speed it is impossible to understand anything, but you can do it easily with a good player. for android i know only one video player app (ADV Player) which does a good job, with a good algorithm speeding up the video so it is clear and easy to understand the audio in the video. on the other android video apps which i have tried it’s hard to understand even with x1,5 speed, and x2 is the limit to make any sense from words, even when they are good at video speed up to x4. (to be correct, in the past i used other good quality android video players in sense of sound quality, but those had limit of speed x2, while ADV Player has x4, so after discovering it i stopped using the slower video apps). for speeding up audio files there is one good app (Audipo) and also some other good player apps, but most video players do a very bad job while speeding up videos, so no wonder you cannot understand anything what is said. you are capable of learning way faster, but you must use good tools for it. so, as i watched the first video lecture again, slowing it down in the places where i wasn’t sure what was said, i learned about an interesting remark which i somehow missed before. it’s worth writing about it here.
the lecturer in the video asked that even if humans could make possible a space travel to other stars and would return, whom they would be of interest after thousands of years? the civilisation will have changed, people will be different. the returned space craft most likely will have an attention only as a show piece in a museum, on how ancient primitive technology had looked like. also humans will be different, evolved in separate ways.
this remark made me to think — what if the supposed aliens, whom some claim to have seen, are from old civilisations from earth who left the earth for other stars and planets, before a global extinction event hit and destroyed that older civilisation. they could be our own ancestors and that’s why they look similar to humans, in sense of having two arms and legs. well, it’s just a speculation, i’m not convinced there are aliens visiting us — i haven’t seen myself. i have only seen flying objects which i couldn’t identify, and i’m far not a specialist on all the secret flying technology that a military force somewhere can have. the supposed alien visitors, which some claim to have seen, could also be biological robots, not looking like the habitants of a distant civilisation who sent them.
another remark the lecturer made in the first video was that on mars the atmospheric pressure is like on earth at the height of 30km (thirty kilometers). so, my comment to you is that let’s get back to the reality of earth, for our survival.
what about some smaller engineering challenges in building a future space colony on earth, the challenges like recycling, cleaning, and so on. currently, on low earth orbit, much of it is taken care of by shifting stuff back and forth between the space stations and the earth. when there will be no more supply line and recycling on earth, how the space colony will manage the entire cycle without losing the true equilibrium and self-sufficiency? you cannot throw away anything forever, even for production of energy, unless there is enough new raw materials available. there will be a need to fabricate new parts for replacement and for expanding the colony as population grows, to produce cleaning materials, to repare the tools that wear out and break, etc. thus, as i described in previous writings, a large quantity of raw materials must be stored in every separate space colony, big part of it in the center of a colony for gravitational stability of the structure, in the microgravity conditions. even if there’s a way to keep the life forms at stable quantity, in absence of raw materials there will be no more progress in rhe colony — the new science and technology will be mostly theoretical.
if the colony decides to shrink in size in order to keep advancing, using for materials the unused cells, it cannot do so endlessly — there’s also a limit to how small a space colony can be, no only how big. the future space colony must count with getting access to new raw materials from space, after the earth is used up. luckily for us the resources of earth will not end tomorrow morning, as far as i know, so there is still time to prepare and find a solution for the distant future.
each of the engineering challenges, even seemingly smallest of them, must be addressed properly, because a failure to find a solution to a single tiniest but important obstacle could mean the future space colony to be an impossible dream. i will continue my research and will share my thoughts on possible solutions on every level, because for survival in a space colony there is no such thing as a small engineering issue — any small unresolved problem may be the end of it all.
