there are currently no materials that would allow to construct a future space colony all around the earth while excavating it from below the structure. gravity will eventually break the structure in many places and it will collapse into itself. it will happen well before the earth’s gravity be weak enough to be not an issue. thus the only way is to begin the construction in many different locations, for separate future space colonies, extending towards the center where the earth is being removed from below and processed for the construction materials. in the beginning of the construction of the colony it could be in a format of a cone, with the tip of it pointed towards the center of the earth — that way the force of gravity, pulling the growing structure, will be distributed to ever larger area, to better support the entire structure. the weight of the structure is better shared between all the pillars if it will be constructed in a form of a cone, expanding the cone in width and depth as the structure grows. in an extended period of time, in thousands of years, while the gravity will be gradually weakening, the future space colony under construction will be gradually extended upwards as well.

i must repeat here (described in previous writings) that there will be no problem of the earth becoming too hot for the life and for work on the project, while the construction towards the center of earth is going on, excavating the earth from below. the earth will be artificially cooled down, with gradual steps, before excavation, while the heat will be converted to usable energy. in the process the soft interior will harden in different locations, which will be used to anchor the structure above, while other locations which were supporting the structure before, will be disconnected. the process of excavation in those disconnected locations will continue, towards the center of earth, with the cycle repeating.

theoretically the science of materials could come up with a way to create on earth even stronger materials than currently possible — they exist in the universe inside stars and large planets, under high pressure. practically though, there is no point in wasting energy for building a space colony with even stronger materials, because the living organisms will not survive in extreme conditions of applied forces anyway (extreme earthquakes, impacts of space rocks and debris, explosions, positive and negative acceleration of the future space colony). there is a reasonable limit to how strong the support structure materials need to be, and by now we have those materials created already. the question is only in reducing the cost of production, to produce those materials in large quantities.

far in the future, when the earth is mostly used up for the structures in different locations and there’s a way to separate them in space, it must be done, for the survival of the civilisation in case if one of the colonies has a total failure to support life. all of them must be entirely self sufficient. there could be no need to divide the colonies into even smaller colonies in the future, but such a capacity of division must be engineered into the colony, in case it grows too large and it needs to be divided. the separate space colonies must be small enough that they could be pushed around in case there’s a danger of a collision with a space rock, or to a better habitable zone in space.

while the colonies are constructed with a large amount of tough cells with relatively weak joints, there’s a limit to how large the entire structure can be in order to be able to push it around. even if there’s not just one huge engine to push the colony but many large engines, the working engines pushing in one direction must be located on the limited area on one side of the space colony. if the mass of the entire structure is too large, then instead of pushing the structure, the engines will squeeze it to the breaking point of the joints.

there are some fantasy movies out there, sci-fi movies, where enormous rocket engines are saving the earth by pushing it to a different location. in science fiction it looks impressive, but in reality the rocket engines pushing the earth as we know it today, is impossible to achieve, even if in theory countless rocket engines could be put together to work as one. it’s because the earth’s crust is thin and it’s softer below the crust. most of the mass is in the center of the earth, so if an engine would attempt to push the earth then it would rather push around the magma below the thin surface, forcing it out at weak spots as volcanos. pushing earth from one spot would squeeze it while the earth itself would barely change its previous trajectory in space. it could be done if the push will be soft enough and gradually/slowly increasing, with many large engines in several locations, but in that case the push would be too weak for a reasonably rapid change to the earth’s trajectory. the speed of change in movement of earth in space will be too slow for any meaningful effect.

the already constructed space colonies can be moved around with engines that aren’t too harsh, capable of increasing the output gradually, but clearly there will be a limit to how large the colonies can be built, depending on the power of the engines and the breaking points of the joints between the cells of the structure.

one more note about the rocket engines, about the technology we currently have, to get real in the fantastic projects humans imagine for the future. it is related to the recent posts about the fake moon landings.

when i was around ten years old or so, my father calculated that for the rocket to go to the moon, with all the fuel needed, it should have been at least three times bigger than the one which supposedly went there. i wasn’t sure he was right because he was not a rocket scientist. my father was a director of an electronics development department in a military factory — it was back then when my country was still part of the soviet union. the soviet factory he worked for, developed electronic measurement equipment of chemicals in air for mining operations, submarines, and space systems, among other tools for different industries. i guess he knew things he couldn’t speak about, but he made the calculations and explained to me that the apollo missions couldn’t have gone to the moon. it was more than forty years ago, in 1980s, so at my ten years of age i didn’t take enough note, until 2003 when i was living in Japan and happened to see a documentary about the moon landings to be fake. i saw the documentary on internet, in english, and it got my attention enough to search for more information available on internet, during many years, while i traveled around the world. who knows what else i could have learned from my dad after the collapse of the soviet union, if he lived long enough to be not bound with the secrecy. the life turned out this way that almost all the research of fake science and conspiracies i did since 2003, prior to that being quite sure that at least science and engineering are the carriers of truth, which turned out to be not always the case.

today i happened to watch a third lecture in the very recent series, in russian, about the proofs on the apollo missions to be fake. these lectures are dense in physics and engineering information, presented with calculations by specialists in the field. the third lecture which i watched today, includes the proof that the apollo rocket had eight times less the energy needed to reach the moon, and it couldn’t have reached even the low earth orbit with the speed it was traveling with — the rocket shown to public for sure didn’t even have people on board because it was bound to splash into the ocean.

with all the solid proofs that i have presented so far, there’s no need to dig out more proofs i suppose, to show the apollo moon landings to be fake with no more doubt.. but that’s not the point here. i keep returning to the discussion rather for advancing the skills of critical thinking in science and engineering, and to see if the construction of a future space colony can be done, to learn about the obstacles and to be grounded in reality.
