one of the challenges in building the space colony for survival of the entire civilisation, is how to make the life interesting besides the necessary tasks for survival. that may seem very difficult considering that the earth will be in the process of being used up for the construction of the colony and the reserve raw materials. even when the space colony is still attached to earth and the process of construction has only just began, relatively speaking, the nature as we know it today will be quickly eliminated. the life will be moved in whatever condition possible into protected spaces. it will be impossible for the construction of the colony to really take off in speed keeping the life on earth intact. an enormous amount of water and fertile soil must be stored away.. and also the air, thus the entire atmosphere of earth will change very fast. the change to living conditions on earth will happen anyway even without our input, even if all humans suddenly die out due to a virus, thus creating several separate safe places for survival to all possible life forms is the only option we have.
one may think it is impossible to move oceans and mountains, but i must repeat (read previous articles on the topic) that there will be an exponential growth in technology. in a thousand years from now, moving an ocean of water and continents of earth will not be difficult with robots controlled by interconnected AI to every machine, organized for a common task. here i continue with understanding that it can be done and will be done, the question is how to keep life pleasant and interesting when the earth is losing its historic face of thousands of years we are used to.
well, if you look at the life of most people in the world today, big part of them live in cities, many of them never leaving their local environment and some even never seeing sky and sun through the pollution, then you can see that making life interesting and more pleasant to them isn’t difficult. and as surprising as it is, many people, born and used to the conditions they are in, don’t even want a change, even if it means discovering a whole new beautiful world. i’m quite confident it will not be difficult to keep people happy in relatively small areas of a space colony, especially when there’s a controlled clean environment with no regular natural disasters and enormous pollution. even today, most people living in terrible conditions, are not moving away when it is possible for them. people are just afraid of change. once born in a space colony under construction, most of the people will be happy where they are, and those who won’t be happy with their condition, will have an opportunity to move, depending on the skills they develop and needs of the civilisation.
while with humans it will be easy i guess, what about the animals we would like to preserve? it will not be possible to save all the species, that’s for sure. only those who would adapt for living in low gravity conditions, in kind of animal sanctuaries inside rotating wheels in space, could be saved. the rest? as the entire project of surviving as a civilisation is exactly that, keeping in mind that one day the earth will lose the capacity to support life anyway, then saving even a small amount of species will be a success. it’s better than nothing.
i’m not trying to pretend that i know all the answers to the technological, scientific and human challenges in this project, but i do believe in the power of mankind to survive if all the brightest brains are put together for the common cause. if you have some ideas and/or solutions to specific problems, then feel free to share with me by writing on my email (find it on the about/contact page – it may change). please avoid proposals like building a colony on the moon or mars.. i will explain in later articles why, but in short: it is impossible. i support the idea of building rockets for such projects, because one day we will figure out how to survive on the moon and mars and just in the outer space, farther from the protective shield of the magnetic field of earth. but at this stage of our technological knowledge and capacity it is a scam to pretend we are going to do it in a near future. beginning to build a future space colony right here on earth is the only realistic way to succeed, at least for now. still we must keep developing the technology to go there, on moons and other planets, because one day will be the day when a mad scientist in a garage will come out, even if by accident, with a solution to protect against cosmic radiation in open space, and other advances in science will find solutions to other obstacles.
unfortunately, due to imperfect human nature, there will be countless fraudulent claims out there about scientific discoveries and engineering achievements, and right now colonizing moon and mars are such fraudulent perspectives. i guess that’s a topic for a separate article.
