the challenges in building such enormous space colony are countless. some of the challenges will remain unknown until the colony is actually built, being discovered in the process of construction. the unknown part of potentially needed future modifications to the space colony in construction means that a significant amount of backup materials must be planned to be stored in the space ships, ready to be used when necessary. the reserve materials don’t need to be in a raw format, but basic enough to be used for all kind of fabrication.

this is a thing that almost all fantasy movies get wrong, while depicting deep space travel. in a space travel lasting for generations, a large part of a spaceship must be a space factory of a kind, capable of producing and repairing everything, literally everything, as nobody knows in advance which part of the spaceship may break down due to wear or a high speed hit by small cosmic particles. while a collision with larger objects could be avoided, being detectable from a great distance, a tiny rock may go through a spaceship and damage vital parts, which could also be an electronic element of the spaceship.

as it is impossible to have spare parts for everything on a spaceship, it means everything must be possible to be manufactured on the spaceship, thus in the process of building the space colony nothing must be used that cannot be later replaced by 3d printing and other local ways of reproducing the necessary parts. thus, as the space colony must be completely self sufficient, it is better to begin construction with relatively small parts, fabricated with portable means. this approach makes sure that it can be done again, when there is no earth anymore with its current mass production means. to construct a space colony by cutting corners so to say, using the large factories on earth, would be setting the future space colony up for a failure, when in the future a failed piece cannot be replaced. the mass production must be used though, but with a different technology, with a large amount of small factories, gradually being modified to achieve the level of using the factories in space.

the only permitted way to cut corners is to produce from raw materials of earth half ready materials in large quantities, but even that process must be proven to be achieved in space, because one day the raw materials will be mined from space.

another obvious challenge, right from the beginning, is in retaining structural integrity of the space colony. no matter how strong the future construction materials will be, there is a limit to the stresses the parts of construction can handle. a way to overcome total failures of the space colony, be it due to earthquakes while the spaceships are still on earth, or due to hits by space rocks, they must be flexible and designed to fail in small areas, while remaining overall functional. the solid space ships, depicted in most fantasy movies, are not a realistic way to go. the solution is provided by nature itself. the space colony must be built in countless cells, connected with flexible joints. some of the cells can be large and voluminous, for production needs of spare parts, others long and thin, connecting different parts of the colony, like nerve cells in a living organism. the colony must be designed in a way that if any part, absolutely any part, will fail, it has enormous redundancy to keep functioning, allowing to repair the failed parts and to quickly recover the redundancy for a case of another failure, or several failures in different cells of the space colony.

an enormous space colony of the size of a planet must be able to let a high speed space rock to travel through it, destroying small parts of it in the process, but not creating such resistance that the entire colony will be destroyed, be it by huge explosions or by shaking it too hard. the cells of the colony must by tough, but connecting joints designed to fail, for the survival of life in nearby cells. this is also needed because collision even with large space rocks, detected from far away, cannot always be avoided — in some cases it would cost more energy to change the trajectory of the entire colony than to rebuild the damaged cells. even if the technology will be out there to destroy the space rocks before collision, the flexibility will also protect against explosions within the colony, be it by accident or on purpose. this approach will greatly increase the survival of the civilisation as a whole, where small local failures will have little effect on the overall integrity of the space colony.

today i made a quick research into a general information about all kind of AI tools out there, to see if there’s something i could use in the project. no time to test them but it’s good to know what’s out there more or less useful, by the opinions of those who did test those AI tools and had some examples to give. there are literally hundreds and even thousands of AI tools out there, websites and apps. it would require quite a time to figure out which of them are truly effective, in sense of adding real value to my research and projects. most of those tools are good at creating a fantasy world. some of the AI creations may even appear seemingly possible but in fact are technically and scientifically not sound. i would rather use my time to keep learning real science, engineering, and other related fields to my projects. it doesn’t mean i will never use AI, it only means that at this point my time is better spent on using sources with reliable information, useful in practice, rather than for dreaming big but being useless in reality.
