the most urgent step to take, to save the civilisation, is to get habitable constructions, connected to earth, out of protective layers of atmosphere. it would greatly diminish the risk of losing it all due to some relatively small local catastrophic event which would cut the earth from sunlight. it could be a volcano eruption or other event with global consequences. as the ecosystem of earth is deeply interconnected, any local disruptive event may quickly become a disaster for all life on earth. thus the first priority is to get at least plants out of the cloud layer, and then even higher, above the level where microscopic volcanic dust could reach, blocking the sun.
the space gardens must be large enough to support entire human population with food, and also most of the animal life. obviously the space gardens will remain in gravitational pull, and that’s a good thing in the beginning. the gardens must support human life up there as well, but not the entire population of earth, most of which will remain down on earth. up there must be created living conditions for needed workers to maintain the gardens and the structure itself.
against the pollution of the entire atmosphere of earth from volcanic dust there’s also a possibility to construct “ventilators” of enormous sizes all over the earth, in strategically chosen locations, forcing spots of sunlight through the layers of volcanic dust, but most likely this method would only stir the dust around, increasing the time it would land naturally. also, from the engineering perspective, the ventilators will be difficult to maintain, with the dust sticking to it and creating thick layers as heavy as rock. it will be more reliable to build plantations higher of the highest layers of clouds, but connected to earth with support structures.
if there’s no time to create the sky gardens and a volcano eruption will block the sun, then there may be no other option to save plant life from dying than to build enormous ventilators all over the earth, to stir the microscopic dust, but there must also enormous filters be present to catch the sticky dust. the regular filters will clog immediately, but there is a way around the clogging problem. the filters can be constructed as stretching grids, like the sliding grid doors, but with way smaller holes. as soon as the filters get clogged, they can be stretched just enough for the air to begin passing through again, and if the filter get blocked again with the sticky dust the stretching can be extended. at some point the dust will be in large enough pieces on the grid that it will break off when the grid filters are moved back and forth, and the process of collecting volcanic dust from air can be repeated. for the collected dust on the filters not to break loose into the air again it can be washed away with water, but i think the gravity will do the job with no water needed.
there could also be other technical solutions for breaking through the layers of volcanic ash blocking the sun, like heating the air with huge burners which don’t create smoke, moving large air columns vertically, or perhaps even exploding some high explosives inside the ash clouds, but i think that a large array of enormous ventilators pointed to the sky, with filters around them, may save some life forms providing them with sunlight. such projects will take time and must be tested now, because when the disaster hits, it will be too late.
the pillars of gardens, reaching from stable areas of earth to clear sunlight, can themselves be habitable. the materials to support such enormous structures exist already, only the production of them is in need of scaling up. clearly such tough building materials must be fabricated in precise dimensions, because there’s little that one can do to adjust the dimensions if some piece is not exact and won’t fit. only powerful lasers, high pressure sand and water cutters will be able to cut those materials, hundreds of times stronger than steel. thus human calculations of such structures are very likely discarded and replaced with advanced self-correcting computer programs, avoiding human errors which are impossible to correct in the process of building the structures. myself, with education in engineering of machinery and automation of fabrication processes, i was working a few summers on constructions of hotels, living complexes and factories as a simple worker when i was younger. i have witnessed quite a mess on the projects during the building process, taking down already built parts, rebuilding, correcting etc., all due to human errors. with the materials as tough as supporting the space colony, or “sky colony”, it won’t be a luxury one can afford. the project must be almost perfect from the beginning. thus, again, thinking about the distant future right now already, is a wise move i suppose, leaving more time to discover any errors.
when the first safety step of survival is taken, with the “sky gardens” ready and working, then the larger construction can begin. i’m leaving the detailed description of the larger construction process for later articles.. it needs a lot of thought and many new ideas, on how to get it done.
far in the future, after the earth is completely used up, it can be replaced in the centre of the space colony with a small “artificial sun”, or sort of generator of light, but not generating much heat. it will rather be symbolic, not with a purpose of generating energy. the energy generators must be all over the colony, in various locations, several of them in each spaceship. direction of the light in the center of the colony can be programmed to rotate similar to the cycles of sun. obviously, most of the colony will not see the light either from inside or outside of the large construction. the light, heat, and all the usable energy must be created in relatively small separate areas, and connected between them, to avoid total failures. also for the times of shutdown due to maintenance there must always be alternative power sources available. clearly the wind, solar and other green nonsense will not provide energy to space colony. it could only be nuclear, renewable with materials collected from outer space, if needed.
