such a global scale project needs first of all a complete mastery of climate.. an artificial climate which would keep all living organisms happy with very little initial adaptation needed. this is a huge engineering challenge, with a required nearly perfect understanding of underlying science. large gradual changes in biology must be accounted for due to gradually decreasing gravity, in the process of earth being used up for construction materials. the concentrated mass of earth will disperse onto the constructed spaceships, being as the result largely hollow inside. some materials for sustaining life, like nutritional soil, water, etc., will be kept, but the spaceships will have a way lower overall density than rocks and metals currently inside earth, most of it under enormous pressure and heated up.

almost all of that, from deep inside the earth, will be used up for construction materials, while the released heat will be converted to usable energy. but that’s a distant future. it all begins with little steps. mountains and bedrock of earth will be used to anchor elevators into nearby space, until the construction closes up around earth, having enough stability to gradually detach from earth in some points and keeping the residual earth in place by other means, be it hard or flexible materials.

when the outer layers of earth are being used up, with needed amount of the water for sustaining life already safe in spaceships under construction, and the exposed deeper layers of earth cool down and harden, then those locations will be used for new places of anchoring, while older higher elevations will be disconnected and the materials excavated. this way all of the earth can be used up for materials, building also powerful enough engines all around the space colony, allowing it to relocate in space when needed — closer to or farther from sun, depending on necessity.

it will not take millions of years to cool down the interior of earth, as it would take naturally. when hot interior is exposed by excavation of materials, the heat can be harvested for energy, rapidly cooling the exposed hot materials.

one of the engineering challenges will be creating an artificial magnetic field to the colony. one day earth will lose its natural magnetic field generation capacity. but by this time the science will be mature enough as to create protective materials against damaging radiation of space, and will also be capable to alter living organisms to be safe from damage by radiation. artificial intelligence will definitely reveal “miracles” in science and engineering. perhaps already in a very near future we will know exactly how such a space colony can be constructed, which doesn’t mean we must just wait it to happen. every input by human intelligence right now will help a future artificial intelligence in having better ideas.


the process of working on this project will definitely create ideas and technical solutions which will be useful already now, not only in a distant future.
